About Naugatuck
The town of Naugatuck got its name from its close proximity to the Naugatuck River. It is located on both sides of the river, which helped it to become the top farming community in the 16th century in Western Connecticut.
Naugatuck was settled in 1701, and became a mill town during the Industrial Revolution. The main product that was first manufactured in the town was rubber. Charles Goodyear manufactured rubber in the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company, located in downtown Naugatuck. The company changed names to The U.S. rubber company in 1961 and made rubber for popular shoes like Keds. Since sulfuric acid prices increased in the early 1900’s, the company primarily became a manufacturer of the chemical which was used in the process of making rubber.
The company changed names in 1904 to the Naugatuck Chemical Company, and became the forefront of America’s chemical industry. Naugatuck was also home to other manufacturers, such as the Hershey’s Company for Candies like the Mounds bar and The Ridson manufacturing Company which manufactured safety pins.
Many of the mills in Naugatuck closed in the late 20th century, when industry greatly declined.
To this day, Naugatuck offers a lot to its residents from its education to scenic location along the Naugatuck River. It has a total of 12 elementary schools in its district and an 84.8% graduation rate. For scenic places to visit, the High Rock Park has a beautiful waterfall and plenty of trails for hiking. The Naugatuck State Forest is a 5,000 acre forest that overlooks the Naugatuck River and includes many swimming and fishing holes. Whether you enjoy looking for wildlife or relaxing in the waterfalls, this Forest has something the whole family will enjoy.
